A migration of Locusta migratoria (L.) reached Finland in the summer of 2010. More than 20 records were made in this summer, which more than doubles the records ever made in Finland. Most observations were made on the southern coast. The northern­most record was made near Oulu, in Siikajoki. L. migratoria was observed also in Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in 2010.


An interesting Cleruchus sp. (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) from bracket fungi on aspen in Karelia, Russia

A long series of a fairyfly wasp belonging to the genus Cleruchus (Hymenoptera My­maridae) was collected from the bracket (polypore) fungi Trametes ochracea and Bjerkandera adusta on aspen, Populus tremula, in Kivach, Karelia, Russia. Taxonom­ic notes are provided on this species, whose female and male are illustrated. It is found to be very similar to, yet slightly different from, C. polypori from the Netherlands.

Kivatsun luonnonsuojelualueelta Venäjän Karjalasta kasvatettiin kahdesta kääpälajista (Trametes ochracea ja Bjerkandera adusta) haavan rungolta pitkä sarja Cleruchus -su­vun hiukepistiäistä (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae). Tämän lajin taksonomiaa käsitellään artikkelissa ja lajin naaraasta ja koiraasta esitetään mikroskooppivalokuvia. Laji poik­keaa vain vähän aikaisemmin Hollannista kuvatusta lajista Cleruchus polypori.


Koivujungin ja punajungin kasvatuksia Etelä-Suomessa (Hymenoptera: Xiphydriidae)

Xiphydriophagus meyerinckii (Ratzeburg) (Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae) was reared in South Häme on eastern shore of the lake Päijänne from Xiphydria camelus. This is the second observation of the species and the first rearing in Finland. Xiphydria prolongata was reared in South Häme from Ulmus laevis, Salix pentandra and Salix caprea. It is a more common species in southern Finland than thought earlier. Near the Biological Station of Lammi many specimens were reared from old Salix caprea together with its parasitoid Coeloides rossicus (Kokujev) (Ichneumonoidea, Braconidae) of which 7 fe­males 17 males emerged. This is the first rearing of the parasitoid in Finland, and only few females have been captured before in Finland.

Koivujungin kasvatuksesta Etelä-Hämeestä Päijänteen itärannalla syntyi 8 naarasta ja 6 koirasta kiilukaislajia Xiphydriophagus meyerinckii (Ratzeburg) (Chalcidoidea: Pte­romalidae). Se on lajin toinen havainto ja ensimmäinen kasvatus Suomesta. Punajunki kasvatettiin Etelä-Hämeessä kynäjalavasta, halavasta ja raidasta. Se ei ole niin harvi­nainen laji jona sitä on pidetty. Lajista saatiin Lammin raitakasvatuksen yhteydessä vai­nopistiäisen Coeloides rossicus (Kokujev) 7 naarasta ja 17 koirasta. Tätä lajia ei ole aikaisemmin kasvatettu Suomessa ja kaikki aikaisemmat löydöt ovat olleet naaraita.


Malaise-rysillä kerätty näyte paarmoista ( Diptera: Tabanidae) Pohjois-Suomesta vuonna 2007

Malaise traps were used to collect insect samples in 29 places in northern Finland. In all, 64 samples were available to studies for Tabanidae, and in 33 of them these flies were found and determined. A Table of these finds is presented, as this is to our knowledge the first systematic field survey of Finnish tabanids published. Virtually all the species determined are common in Finland, or at least common in Finnish Lapland like Hybomitra sexfasciata (Hine,1923). Even Chrysops sepulcralis (Fabricius,1794) and Hybomitra montana ssp. montana (Meigen, 1820) – earlier regarded as uncom­mon in Lapland – were well represented in this material. Hybomitra arpadi (Szila­dy,1923) was found as new for the biogeographical province Kainuu – Kn: Suomus­salmi, Toskanoja 23.6 – 29.7 2007, 2 females. The placement of Malaise trap seems to be of utmost importance, when many of them did not catch Tabanidae at all, but the best trap caught 114 specimens. Perhaps the localities of Malaise traps were also very suitable for the two species mentioned, C. sepulcralis and H. m. montana.


Conura xanthostigma (Dalman, 1820) Suomessa (Hymenoptera, Chalcididae)

In the 2010 Red List of Finnish Species Conura xanthostigma (Dalman, 1820) is con­sidered endangered (EN). In 2010 two new finds were made in Finland. These and all known previous finds are presented with text and a distribution map.


Hapsijäärän Necydalis major Linné (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) kasvatuksia Etelä-Suomessa

Specimens of the cerambycid species Necydalis major were reared in South Häme: Hä­meenlinna, Aulanko from the trunk of a white willow (Salix alba), in South Savo: Lap­peenranta, Monnonmäki from a rotten aspen (Populus tremula), and in Hämeenlinna, Lammi from the trunk of a small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata). One female and one male of Coleocentrus caligatus (Gravenhorst) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Acaenitinae) were reared together with Necydalis major in Monnonmäki and Lammi respectively. These are the first rearings of this large ichneumonid from Necydalis.

Hapsijäärä kasvatettiin Hämeenlinnan Aulangolla valkosalavan rungosta, Lappeenrannan Monnonmäessä lahosta haavasta, ja Hämeenlinnan Lammilla metsälehmuksen rungosta. Monnonmäestä haapakasvatuksen yhteydessä hapsijäärän loisena kasvatettiin yksi lois­pistiäisen Coleocentrus caligatus (Gravenhorst) (Ichneumonidae: Acaenitinae) naaras. Lammin Biologisen aseman lehdosta metsälehmuksen rungosta kasvatettiin hapsijäärien ohella saman loispistiäisen yksi koiras. Nämä ovat ensimmäiset hapsijäärästä kasvatetut lajin yksilöt maailmassa. Koiras on ehkä Suomen ensimmäinen koiras.


Parasitoid wasps (Hymenoptera) reared from two polypore fungi on aspen in Kivach, the Karelian Republic of Russia

A sample of two polypore species (Trametes ochracea and Bjerkandera adusta) on as­pen was taken on 21.5.1998 in Kivach, Karelia, Russia for rearing. Seven species of Co­leoptera (Agathidium pisanum [Leiodidae], Orthoperus punctatus [Corylophidae], Cis boleti, C. submicans, C. fissicornis, Octotemnus glabriculus and Sulcacis fronticornis [Ciidae]) were obtained, and in addition seven species of small parasitoid wasps also emerged: two braconid species (Meteorus cis and Aphaereta scaptomyzae), two ptero­malid species (Janssoniella sp. and Plutothrix sp.), one euderine eulophid species (As­tichus sp.) and two mymarids (Camptoptera foersteri and Cleruchus sp.). All parasitoid wasps, except Aphaereta scaptomyzae, are previously known to be parasitoids on spe­cies of Ciidae.

Keväällä 1998 otettiin kasvatusta varten Kivatsun luonnonsuojelualueella Venäjän Kar­jalassa pinovyökääpä (Trametes ochracea)- ja tuhkakääpänäyte (Bjerkandera adusta) haavan rungolta. Kasvatuksessa syntyi seitsemän kovakuoriaislajia: Agathidium pisa­num (Leiodidae), Orthoperus punctatus (Corylophidae) ja viisi kääpiäislajia: Cis boleti, C. submicans, C. fissicornis, Octotemnus glabriculus ja Sulcacis fronticornis (Ciidae) ja niiden ohella seitsemän loispistiäislajia: kaksi vainokaislajia (Meteorus cis ja Aphaereta scaptomyzae), kaksi pteromalidia (Janssoniella sp. ja Plutothrix sp.), yksi euderini (As­tichus sp.) ja kaksi hiukepistiäistä (Camptoptera foersteri and Cleruchus sp.). Näistä 6 lajia on aiemmin todettu olevan kääpiäisten loisia ja yksi laji (Aphaereta scaptomyzae) elää pienten kärpästen toukissa.

Ruotsille uusina lajeina ilmoitetaan Mesochorus bipartitus Schwenke, M. declinans Habermehl, M. diluvius Schwenke, M. flexus Schwenke ja M. solus Schwenke, Nor­jalle M. alpigenus Strobl, Virolle M. bipartitus Schwenke, M. carinatus Schwenke, M. declinans Schwenke, M. diluvius Schwenke, M. flexus Schwenke, M. sternalis Schwenke, M. solus Schwenke ja M. tipularis Gravenhorst, Irlannille M. discitergus (Say) ja M. rubeculus Schwenke, Hollannille M. maximus Schwenke, Ranskalle M. aranealis Schwenke, M. fulgurator Horstmann ja M. mellis Schwenke sekä Madeiralle M. cinctus Strobl.

Uusia synonyymejä ovat Mesochorus cinctus Schwenke lajille bipartitus Schwenke ja M. orbis Schwenke lajille mellis Schwenke. Koiras on ilmoitettu ensimmäisen kerran lajeille Mesochorus bipartitus Strobl, M. boreus Schwenke, M. mellis Schwenke, M. sternalis Schwenke ja M. triangulus Schwenke.


The occurrence of Eutomostethus ephippium (Panzer) and E. nigrans (Konow) (Hymenoptera: Symphyta: Tenthredinidae) in Northern Europe

The specimens of Eutomostethus ephippium (Panzer) and E. nigrans (Konow) were ex­amined in Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish collections of sawflies, and data of them was gathered from Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. The occurrence of both species is shown in the 50-squares of the UTM grid maps. E. ephippium is widely distributed in North Europe: it is found in all studied countries. From Finland 778 fe­males of E. ephippium were found. They are from the biogeographical provinces Åland, Varsinais-Suomi, Uusimaa, South Karelia, Satakunta, South Häme, South Savo, Lado­ga Karelia, South Ostrobothnia, North Häme, North Savo, North Karelia, Central Os­trobothnia, Kainuu, Oulu Ostrobothnia and Koillismaa. Eutomostethus nigrans is found in Denmark (only old specimens in collections), Norway and Sweden. In addition one female of E. nigrans has been captured in Finland: Varsinais-Suomi, Raasepori, Fiskars, 25.6.1908 (leg. R. Frey). From Norway E. nigrans has been collected from 34 localities in 11 fylkes and its area appears larger than that of E. ephippium. The males recorded earlier from Norway could not be found, and their identification is possibly not cor­rect; the male of the species is unknown. In Sweden the two species occur about equal­ly frequently, and they have the same distribution area. E. ephippium is known from Skåne, Halland, Småland, Öland, Östergötland, Västergötland, Närke, Södermanland, Uppland, Dalarna, Gästrikland and Ångermanland. E. nigrans is known from Skåne, Småland, Gotland, Östergötland, Bohuslän, Närke, Södermanland, Uppland, Värmland, Dalarna, Gästrikland and Ångermanland. No males of either species were found in Fin­land and Sweden, and the earlier identified males proved to be misidentified and be­longed to Stethomostus fuliginosus (Schrank) or S. funereus (Klug).


Hammerschmidtia ingrica Stackelberg, 1952 – Inkerinmahlanen Suomesta (Diptera, Syrphidae)

Hoverfly species Hammerschmidtia ingrica Stackelberg, 1952 is reported as new to Finland on the basis of one male and a copula collected in 2011 by net. They were found on military island Santahamina which belongs to the eastern archipelago in Helsinki. The distribution of the species is now from Finland, European part of Russia and on through Siberia almost to the Pacific.


Helsingin Vanhankaupunginlahden ja reuna-alueiden kukkakärpäset (Diptera, Syrphidae)

The local fauna of hoverflies (Diptera, Syrphidae) in the study area Helsinki Vanhankaupunginlahti and its fringe areas is presented. In total, 210 species have been recorded. This number represents almost 60 % of the total number, 357, of hoverfly species recorded in Finland. Nine species with photos included are new to the Finnish fauna: Pipiza festiva Meigen, 1822, Chrysogaster virescens Loew, 1854, Epistrophe diaphana (Zetterstedt, 1843), Epistrophe olgae Mutin, 1999 , Heringia latitarsis (Egger, 1865), Leucozona inopinata Doczal, 2000, Parasyrphus proximus Mutin, 1990 and Triglyphus primus Loew, 1840. Nine further species are redlisted species (Rassi eds. 2010) in Finland. Comments on some rare species are provided. They are marked by asterisk in Table 1.


Taxonomic notes on Caraphractus (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae)

Taxonomic notes on the Holarctic fairyfly genus Caraphractus Walker, 1846 (Hy­menoptera: Chalcidoidea: Mymaridae) and its only recognized species C. cinctus Wal­ker, 1846 are given. Caraphractus flavicollis Hellén, 1974 (Finland) is synonymized under C. cinctus. A lectotype is designated for C. reductus Rimsky-Korsakov, 1920, also a synonym of C. cinctus. Caraphractus hazomanitrae Risbec, 1952 (Madagas­car), for which a lectotype is designated, is transferred to Acmopolynema Ogloblin, 1946 as A. hazomanitrae (Risbec), syn. n. Camptoptera perineti (Risbec, 1952) (Ma­dagascar, originally described as Stichothrix perineti) is synonymized under A. hazo­manitrae.


Kukkakärpäsiä (Diptera: Syrphidae) Malaise-rysin Pohjois-Suomesta vuonna 2007

Malaise traps were used to collect insect samples from 42 places – with two service visits each – in northern Finland from Kainuu to Inari Lapland. Syrphids occurred alto­gether in 60 samples, of which we determined 796 specimens representing 87 species. In comparable places with two visits most specimens, 70 % of the total catch, were ob­served during the first collection period from early June to about 20th July. Traps that were placed in the arcto-alpine region among alpine heaths and meadows, mountain birch forests or rich fens harbored most of the collected specimens. Syrphys ribesii (74 exx.) was dominant in the catches, followed by Parasyrphus tarsatus (70 exx.), Mela­nostoma scalare (65 exx.) and Scaeva selenitica (39 exx.). None of the species were present in all traps, Scaeva selenitica was found most often, in 16 traps, and 27 species occurred as singletons in the studied material. There were 12 new provincial records (KiL four, Kn four, Le two, InL one and PPe one record). Syrphids that were either abundant in the traps or new for any biogeographical province are regarded as rather common and widespread in northern Finland. Some Platycheirus species are held very rare in Finland. However, based on our findings and unpublished records entered into the database at Finnish Museum of Natural History, rarity of P. aeratus, P. latimanus, P. lundbecki, P. subordinatus, P. tarsalis, P. transfugus and P. varipes, should be re-evaluated.

New records of the endangered jewel-beetle, Dicerca alni, are reported from SW Finland.


Suomelle uusi kirjatäilaji Liposcelis palatina Roesler ja muita mielenkiintoisia havaintoja jäytiäisistä (Psocoptera)

Pohjoismaiden jäytiäislajisto on kattavasti esitelty Nationalnyckeln –sarjan kirjassa (Svensson & Hall 2010). Tämän kirjan julkaisemisen jälkeen Suomesta on löydetty uutena kirjatäilaji Liposcelis palatina. Suomen faunasta poistetaan väärin määritetty laji Blaste quadrimaculata. Valenzuela gynapterus –lajista on löydetty lyhytsiipinen brachyptera –muoto ja Elipsocus –suvusta muoto E. cf. pumilis, jonka lajistatus on epäselvä. Lisäksi kerrotaan lajien Philotarsus parviceps Roesler ja Peripsocus con­sobrinus Pearman esiintymisestä Suomessa.


Nomada succincta Panzer, 1798 (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Suomelle uusi mesipistiäislaji Vantaalta

Nomada succincta Panzer, 1798 is recorded from Finland for the first time. Three spe­cimens (2 males, 1 female) were caught by a net in 2008 from Vantaa. Since then more than 100 specimens were recorded in a small area of eastern Vantaa during the summers of 2009-2011. Most likely the primary host of N. succincta in Finland is An­drena nigroaenea (Kirby, 1802). Individuals of the cleptoparasitic N. succincta were observed to participate the swarming of A. nigroaenea, probably to absorb the smell of the host. One likely copulation of N. succincta was also observed during the swarming event. Nomada goodeniana, a sibling species of N. succincta and earlier suspected to be conspecific with it, was not found among these swarming despite its abundance at the same area. This behavioural difference supports the validity of the species status of both these species.
