Butterfly communities on field margins: Effects of changes in farming methods and adjacent forest cuttings (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea, Papilionoidea)

Saarinen, K. & Jantunen, J. 2003: Butterfly communities on field margins: Effects of changes in farming methods and adjacent forest cuttings (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea, Papilionoidea). — Sahlbergia 8: 1-10. Helsinki, Finland, ISSN 1237-3273.

Between 1991 and 2000, butterflies were monitored once a week from early May to late September on a 2.7 km transect on agricultural land at Joutseno, SE Finland. During 213 counts a total of 56 species and 11 105 individuals were recorded. The effects of the shift from conventional farming to organic farming and adjacent pine forest cuttings on butterfly communities were compared in four field margin habitats. Between the two five-year periods, both beneficial and adverse impact on butterflies was recorded.

The Sawfly fauna of Nilsiä and Juankoski (Eastern Finland) (Hymenoptera, Symphyta)

Nuorteva, J. & Nuorteva, M. 2003: The Sawfly fauna of Nilsiä and Juankoski (Eastern Finland) (Hymenoptera, Symphyta). — Sahlbergia 8:11-19. Helsinki, Finland, ISSN 1237-3273.

The sawfly fauna of two communes in eastern Finland was investigated . A total of 7251 specimens, representing 316 species were found. Pseudoclavellaria amerinae (Linnaeus), which had been considered extinct in Finland, was found in three places. The material included rare species such as Sterictiphora sorbi Kontuniemi and Arge pagana (Panzer). Cephus nigrinus Thomson, C. fumipennis Eversmann and Janus luteipes (Lepletier) were found north of their prevoiusly known distribution area.

Sorvari, J. 2003: Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius 1793), asunnoissa pesivä muurahainen – uusia havaintoja Suomessa [Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius 1793), an indoor- living ant – new records from Finland] (Hymenoptera, Formicidae, Dolichoderinae) — Sahlbergia 8: 20. Helsinki, Finland, ISSN 1237-3273.

T. melanocephalum is a widespread cosmopolitan ant, widely distributed in the tropics and frequently imported to Europe. Prevoius records of the species in Finland are from Helsinki. New finds (Om: Kannus and Oba: Oulu), probably the northernmost records of the species, are reported. In northern areas, T. melanocephalum survives only in sideheated buildings.

Rutanen, I. 2003: Soukkohärölajien Monotoma quadricollis Aubé ja M. bicolor Villa & Villa esiintymisestä Suomessa (Coleoptera, Monotomidae). [On the occurrence of Monotoma quadricollis Aubé and M. bicolor Villa & Villa in Finland]. — Sahlbergia 8: 25-26. Helsinki, Finland. ISSN 1237-3273.

The beetle species Monotoma quadricollis Aubé, recently separated from its close relative M. bicolor Villa & Villa, is for the first time reported from Finland after examination of the material of M. bicolor of the Zoological Museum, Helsinki and two private collections. Both species showed to have about the same distribution and the same frequency. The rare species M. testacea Motschulsky is reported from the Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki. A new record concerning M. testacea is reported from a compost heap in Hyvinkää.

Etelänukonkorennon (Aeshna mixta Latreille, 1805) vaellukset Suomeen 2002-2003 (Odonata, Aeshnidae)

Hämäläinen, M., Huldén, L. & Karjalainen, S. 2004: Etelänukonkorennon (Aeshna mixta Latreille, 1805) vaellukset Suomeen 2002-2003 (Odonata, Aeshnidae). – Sahlbergia 8: 49-54. Helsinki, Finland, ISSN 1237-3273.

Migrant individuals of Aeshna mixta were recorded for the first time in Finland in August-September 2002 and again in August-October 2003. Confirmed observations from several sites along the southern coast of the country (in N: Porvoo, N: Helsinki, N: Espoo, N: Kirkkonummi, Ab: Pohja, Ab: Karjaa) and from Åland archipelago (Al: Lemland) are listed. Most records were made in bays by the sea, but a few also at a distance of 4-6 km from the coast. The distribution A. mixta and its migratory tendency are briefly discussed. The nearest autochthonous populations occur in the Riga region in Latvia, and this area might be the source of the migration to Finland. Records made by Doppler weather radar show that very large insects flew from Estonia towards Helsinki in many occasions at the end of July and the beginning of August in 2002, in afternoons when southeastern winds prevailed; apparently these insects were migrant A. mixta.
